When I started my fitness journey at 32, I was 252 pounds, suffered extensively from gout, and was on the fast track to a heart attack by 40. I had just finished grad school, and after years of ignoring my health, it was time for a change. I spent six months at a local MMA gym but wasn’t seeing the results I wanted. The wife and I decided it was time to check into all this CrossFit hype. After visiting every CrossFit in town, we decided upon CFBB based on cost, location, and perceived quality of coaching. It was the best health decision we ever made.

Flash forward 3.5 years: I weigh in at just over 180 pounds, and I am in the best shape of my life. CFBB didn’t just provide intense training and great coaching, but also an incredible community. While I still have health and body composition goals to work towards, I have learned to love the journey and build a lifestyle that will ultimately keep me happy and healthy far longer than chasing any short-term goal would.

Lastly, as I sit here typing this while holding my 2-month-old son, I have a sense of pride as I contemplate the example of wellness I will be for him versus the couch potato example I would have been. Thank you CFBB for making me, and by extension my family, healthier.

In January 2016, I officially became a full-fledged member of CrossFit Black Box. It was an emotional and exciting decision, a decision that stemmed from a traumatic life experience and a thirst for change. My lifestyle 360 happened a year prior, when my mom had to have a sudden open-heart surgery to prevent certain death. My daily college routine of Ramen noodles, binge drinking and homework at 3 a.m. suddenly had me questioning my health and my future. I joined the Florida State University CrossFit club shortly after, which was hosted each week at – you guessed it – CrossFit Black Box. It was fun, and soon I had a hunger for fitness and goals set that couldn’t be reached by my thrice-weekly appearances at the CrossFit club.

I can’t even begin to thank CrossFit Black Box enough for the life that they helped me create for myself over the past couple of years. Sure, I am stronger, faster, and generally fitter than I have ever been. However, I also find that I am more open to constructive criticism, I am more accepting of people from all walks of life, I am more determined to complete daunting tasks, and I am more outgoing and welcoming to others because of my experiences at CrossFit Black Box. I want to share CrossFit with anyone and everyone in hopes that it can change their lives for the better, too.

Each and every day I am surrounded by coaches that care more about my safety, happiness, and achievements than I ever thought possible at a gym. I look around at my friends and wonder if I would have even met them, much less have them all crammed on my couch drinking red wine and laughing at inside jokes, if I hadn’t met them all at CrossFit Black Box.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, how fit you are, or where you come from – the people at CrossFit Black Box will bring out the best in you. The people at CrossFit Black Box will not only be there to high-five you after a workout or help you clean up your weights, but also to invite you over for a party, give you a ride to work when your car won’t start, or bring you lunch when you’re having a Monday on a Thursday. They are the people that you want to have cheering you on at your first CrossFit competition, supporting you when you have your first child, and by your side when your personal life is falling apart. I can only hope and pray to be a light in someone’s life like the Black Box family has been in mine. Thank you all for constantly pushing me to strive to do more and to be more.

The people you find inside of that little warehouse are completely irreplaceable, incredibly inspiring, and more full of life and determination and love than any other people on the planet. And that is a fact.

A few years ago, after a little cardiac “event,” I decided I had to get my health and life back. A 30-year old emergency room doctor had told me I’d be on medicine the rest of my life. That was the moment I realized I had hit rock bottom. I’d allowed myself to gain weight and was not happy with the way I looked or felt. My father passed away from obesity complications, and I knew I had to get myself healthy for my wife and kids. A friend introduced me to the good people at CrossFit Black Box, and here we are today.

I had lost some weight before joining, but I was soft. And I have a titanium plate, nine screws and 2 mm of donor bone in my left leg from a motorcycle crash. I wasn’t sure if I could actually DO the workouts. But I went, and I was immediately welcomed by the members and coaches at Black Box. The environment is supportive, the people are energetic and motivating, and my entire family was welcomed and embraced. And I COULD do the workouts.

Everyone starts at their own pace, and I loved everything about this new environment. I made goals for myself, and I was given every chance to succeed. The coaches are world-class and always have members’ well-being and success in their best interests. We’ve made lifelong friends, and I am proud to say I’ve gone from being overweight and in poor health to winning gold medals in Olympic lifting competitions. I am in the best shape of my life, and I’ll be 50 this year. FIFTY. And I love every minute of it.
